Worklog: Todadile V3

Essentially all our PCs died during the move from California, so Christmas 2005 we splurged and bought 3 new Hewlett-Packard Pavilion a1213ws. Why'd we choose these? Because these particular units were the only machines Walmart had, which had LCDs. We were't driving 40mi to the nearest Best Buy, and we weren't waiting for them to come mail order.

The Asus board that's in these machines leaves much to be desired. The SiS760 chipset is absolute pants, the mobo uses non-standard sensors for temperatures, no PCI-X (as far as I know anyway), I could go on with gripes. But overall it's an okay machine for what I wanted it for, and now that I've had it a while I decided to make it my own (voiding the warranty of course).

I started out by disassembling the front cover. I removed all the white parts (I'm keeping those white), the buttons, the LED bezel, etc. I then poked out the two badges, and used bondo to fill the spaces where the badges went. After the bondo dried, I sanded it smooth (sort of) and started painting. 6 coats, and a sanding with 1500 grit paper in between each, I had it pretty well where I wanted it. I reassembled it, and now it's waiting on a final polish to bring out the shine.

Photos forthcoming.
